Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Last night’s game was a microcosm of what we’ve watched for 19 games this season, representative of all the traits that hold this team back.
Blown third period lead ✓
Fail to capitalize on chances ✓
Only take one penalty, but allow a power-play goal ✓
One goal game (11 of 19, so far) ✓
Loser Point ✓
“I don't think the group is worrying about blowing a lead or thinking about that,” Noah Dobson said after the 2-1 shootout loss in Calgary. Well, Noah, your fanbase does and for good reason. The Isles have now allowed a tying goal in seven games this season, winning only two of them (2-2-3). One thing they hadn’t done was a lose a game when leading headed into the third period, that was unfortunate circumstance hadn’t happened before last night (5-0-1).
And as usual, despite all of the above, the Islanders almost always almost won. They were outchanced by Calgary, but had their opportunities to extend the lead in the third and then win it after regulation.
No chance was better, or closer than Dobson’s ringing a one-timer off the cross-bar while on the power-play in overtime. A quarter-of-an-inch difference, and we would be stuffing away all minutiae that adds up to another frustrating point where they could have earned two. "Look, I thought that we played a great game, again, and we could've won that game,"Patrick Roy said.
"Both teams played well. I cannot say that we outplayed them, or they outplayed us. I thought both teams played well, and they won in a shootout."
A familiar refrain after a familair script that led to an all too familair outcome.
