Good Morning, Islanders Country.
It happened 18 years ago today - the greatest poke-check in NHL history and a reminder that in sports, anything is possible.
On Easter Sunday in 2007, the Islanders defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in a shootout to earn a trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the most improbable playoff berth in franchise history. The diminutive Wade Dubielewicz was the hero.
Now, I would bring this game up on this day no matter what, but it’s especially relevant this year as the Islanders are seven points out of a playoff spot with only six games left to play in the 2024-25 hockey season. Playoff probabilities weren’t as readily available in 2007, but the postseason felt as impossible as it does now.
