Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Die-hard hockey fans, the kind who subscribe and read newsletters in the middle of February, don’t need to be told how special this game can be. It’s our little secret. We’ve felt it in double overtimes. We’ve lived it in Game 7s. We’ve paced living rooms and muttered at TVs and sworn we’d never put ourselves through such pain, torture, and agony again.
And yet, every so often, hockey breaks out of its niche and reminds the rest of the country what we’ve known all along.
Sunday morning was one of those moments.
While some nursed coffee on their couch and others leaned into something a little stronger at bars across the country, Team USA and Team Canada delivered a spectacle that felt like it belonged in late May, not mid-February. It had everything: the nerves that never settle, the sweaty palms, the stunned silence after an unlikely save, and the eruption when it finally goes in.
It felt like a Stanley Cup Final played in broad daylight.
These games are supposed to be overhyped. Best-on-best. That kind of billing usually sets you up for disappointment.
This one didn’t disappoint. It exceeded it. Every shift mattered. Every mistake felt catastrophic. Every save felt heroic.
You’ll forever remember where you were, and who you were with, when a chipped-toothed and bloody-mouthed Jack Hughes scored the OT winner, making every Connor Hellebuyck save that preceded that much more legendary.
You could see it in the players’ faces during the game, and after during the medal ceremony. This was legacy. This was pride. This was brotherhood. This was hockey at its most honest and most raw. And this is exactly why shutting down the NHL for three weeks every four years is worth it.
Because nothing — not marketing campaigns, third jerseys, not rule changes, not expansion announcements — grows the game like this does. Nothing captures casual fans and converts them faster than seeing the absolute best players in the world represent something bigger than their club logo.
For three weeks, the league pauses.
But the sport explodes. And on Sunday morning, it reminded us why we put ourselves through the nerves in the first place, and maybe made it make sense for the others for the first time.
Family Tradition
Former Islander Brock Nelson added another golden chapter to an already remarkable family legacy in 2026, capturing Olympic gold as a member of Team USA. For Nelson, the moment wasn’t just personal — it was generational.
The roots of that achievement stretch back decades. In 1980, his uncle Dave Christian was part of the iconic “Miracle on Ice” team that stunned the world and won gold for the United States. Even earlier, in 1960, Nelson’s grandfather, Bill Christian, and great-uncle Roger Christian stood atop the Olympic podium as gold medalists for Team USA.
Three Olympic eras. One family name. From Squaw Valley to Lake Placid to 2026, the Nelson-Christians have become synonymous with American hockey greatness.
Silver Showing
Bo Horvat took home a silver medal at the Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 following a 2-1 OT loss to Team USA on Sunday. Horvat skated 10:21 in the Gold Medal Game, finishing plus-one with no shots, but one penalty drawn. He was also asked to take a key face-off in OT, which he won, before heading back to the bench. He finished with two goals in six games.
Meet The Team
Before the snow came, Islanders season ticket holders headed out to UBS Arena for the annual Meet The Team event. The format was a little different this time, with fans getting to visit one table with one or two Islanders players.
⏭ NEXT UP: The Islanders play hockey this week, returning to action on Thursday night against Noah Dobson and the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM EST.

PR Machine
Islanders Senior Vice President of Communications Kimber Auerbach was part of the celebration as he served as a media officer for the Men’s Ice Hockey Team. He previously assisted with communications for Team USA at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. Auerbach oversees all communications for the Islanders and serves as the primary contact for media seeking to engage with ownership, hockey operations, the coaching staff, and the players.
📚 SOUND SMART: Per NHL PR, Matthew Tkachuk became the ninth player to win an Olympic gold medal in a season after winning the Stanley Cup and the first since a trio of Blackhawks: Duncan Keith, Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Sharp, when they won gold in 2014 after a Stanley Cup win in 2013.
🎥 ISLES REWIND: On Feb. 23, 1997, the high-powered Pittsburgh Penguins were missing Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis, and the Islanders took advantage of it in a 4-1 win at the Nassau Coliseum. Defenseman Rich Pilon scored his first goal in over two years in the win. Marty McInnis and Travis Green each scored power-play goals, and Tommy Salo made 27 saves. Also, former Islander Darius Kasparaitis took a humorous dive for the Pens.

🔗 Olympic Roster Freeze Over: What’s Next For The New York Islanders? by Stefen Rosner, The Hockey News “Over the break, teams were unable to make any trades. Players could be waived, but they didn’t have to report immediately, while contract negotiations could also be officially signed and submitted. There’s been some rumors — when have there not been? — that general managers may have some trades lined up, as teams were allowed to talk with other teams throughout the break.”

Pretty amazing game. Joe you said it all perfectly as always. I watched the OT a few times & the bench reaction to the win was CRAZY!!! From the players perspective, It can't be equated to winning the cup because ANY playoff team can do so every year. This is both every FOUR years & you have to be lucky enough to be among the elite to make the team.
The video clip of my man pilon & darius was awesome!!!!! Miss watching them both. Thank you!!
Who TF cares? The entire USA team just partied w/ the fascist Kash Patel knowingly & proudly. The fascist who got drunk on taxpayer dollars. Every USA hockey player can eat a bag of dicks. Anyone who parties w/ a fascist is a fascist. And if you think otherwise you’re a gd fascist too.
