Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Every team deals with adversity during a season.
What every team hopes to avoid is an injury wave, the kind that doesn’t just remove one important player but starts changing the shape of the roster. The Islanders have not avoided that.
In fact, the wave has arrived early and hard.
It started with uncertainty around Mathew Barzal and no clear timetable for his return. Then Alexander Romanov suffered another season-ending injury, which was already a major blow. Now Matias Maccelli and Calum Ritchie are expected to miss several weeks, if not longer, with lower-body injuries. At some point, this stops being a normal run of bad luck and becomes the season's central challenge.
That makes Peter DeBoer’s job significantly harder. The expectations for this team were modest to begin with, and now four players expected to contribute meaningfully are unavailable. The built-in excuse is there if DeBoer wants it.
