Good Morning, Islanders Country.
I’ll admit it. When the Penguins took a 3-1 lead in the third period, I thought hopes that this team could weather the injury storm and stay afloat were starting to evaporate—and then everything changed.
This was a gutsy and pesky team win. The Isles had every reason to put their heads down after early missed opportunities, a coach’s challenge going the other way, and falling two goals in the third period. Instead, they responded in a way we hadn’t seen this season. First, they stole a point, and then they stole another by killing a penalty in OT and winning in a shootout. Who saw that coming?
It’s exactly the type of win you must have when playing short-handed. You’re at home against a division rival that’s been struggling. If you can’t win these games with your current roster, how do you go on the road to beat Ottawa on Thursday or head out west next week and collect points?
"That's what I love about our group: they're resilient, they don't feel sorry for themselves,” said Patrick Roy. “Even if it was a 1-3 game, we came back. We should feel good about ourselves. Some nights you win some ugly ones & tonight might have been an ugly one, so good for us"
Roy has talked repeatedly about deserving better. Last night, they didn’t play their best 60 minutes, but they made the key plays at the key moments to get a result that was still very deserving.
