Good Morning, Islanders Country.
In the movie Shawshank Redemption, Red famously tells Andy, “Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.”
It’s a line that lingers, because it captures the fragility of believing in something better when the present feels heavy. But for New York Islanders fans this season, hope is not only unavoidable, it’s essential.
There is a special feeling in sports when you catch a glimpse of the future, when possibility takes center stage, and when optimism becomes the story that carries fans through the grind of a season. For the Islanders, that optimism is embodied right now by two names: Matthew Schaefer and Mathieu Darche.
Regardless of what the standings may read in April, these two figures represent something larger—hope, renewal, and the promise that better days are not only possible but already beginning to take shape.
Schaefer is the kind of player who can change the temperature of an entire fan base, with every shift and every stride he takes whispers the promise of a new era. When those ping pong balls broke the Isles' way, it changed everything, and now the future is not something to fear—it’s something we eagerly await.
“When you watch [Cale]Makar play, it’s exciting. I think Schaefer has that gift, head coach Patrick Roy said on Tuesday. “Time will tell, but when I see him move with the puck, it’s exciting not just for me or the players, but I think our fans are going to have fun too.”
Then there’s Darche, the new general manager, whose presence signals a fresh organizational direction. His track record, credibility, and modern outlook instill confidence that the Islanders are not standing still. Darche represents strategic vision—the belief that with careful planning, sharper execution, and a commitment to evolving with the game, this franchise can compete at the highest levels. His leadership, paired with the roster’s emerging talent, gives weight to the hope fans feel. It isn’t blind optimism; it’s optimism anchored in real change.
That’s the beauty of this moment for Islanders fans.
Whatever the standings are at season’s end, it won’t erase the hope that’s been planted. Islanders fans have permission to daydream again and think about not what’s been, but what’s to come. Remember what Andy wrote to Red at the end, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
The hope surrounding the Islanders should last at least this season; maybe it’ll lead to the best of things, or perhaps it’ll end up driving us insane.
The puck drops on the season tomorrow, and we’ll start to find out.
📚 SOUND SMART: Matthew Schaefer will make his NHL debut for the Islanders against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins on Oct. 9, then take on Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals two days later on Oct. 11.
Connor Bedard (Oct. 10, 2023) and former Islanders’ first overall pick, John Tavares (Oct. 3, 2009) are the only other first-overall picks to make his NHL debut against Crosby. Schaefer can become the 38th No. 1 pick Crosby has faced in his career, which will tie Corey Perry, Zach Parise and Zdeno Chara for the second-most in NHL history, behind Jaromir Jagr (39).
🎥 ISLES REWIND: On October 8, 1987, the Islanders named Brent Sutter the fourth captain in franchise history when Denis Potvin relinquished the role ahead of his final NHL season. Sutter was drafted 17th overall at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. The Isles drafted Sutter in the first round of the 1980 NHL Draft (17th overall) and won two cups with the Islanders in 1982 and 1983. He remained captain until early 1991-1992, when the Isles traded him with Brad Lauer to Chicago and got Adam Creighton and Steve Thomas in return.
