Good Morning, Islanders Country.
On Wednesday, the Islanders posted a mystery message connected to their Hometown Remix jersey, and fans spent part of the day trying to decipher it. Some worked through the clues themselves. One nerded out in the best way possible and provided a detailed explanation. Others asked Grok for the answer.
Either way, that code turned out to be easier to crack than the mystery surrounding Mathew Barzal. Later this morning, we’ll have a full accounting of the timeline and how the Islanders’ messaging has evolved.
A few months ago, Barzal had just completed an 81-game season at a high level and seemed on track for a normal off-season. Then he withdrew from the World Championships as a precaution because of a prior ‘minor injury,’ followed by inflammation ahead of training camp that shut him down on Sept. 17 and created uncertainty about whether he'd be ready for opening night.
At first, he wasn’t ruled out. He even traveled to Toronto with the team. From there, though, the timeline only became murkier. He began skating on his own, but after a month and nine regular-season games, he still isn't ready to rejoin the team and ramp things up.
On Wednesday, Mathieu Darche’s latest comments added another layer.
