Hockey Night in NY

Good Morning, Islanders Country.

There’s a difference between promise and proof, and we’re seeing the latter.

For years, we’ve squinted at prospects, prayed for breakouts, and waited for a spark that always seemed a season away. But now, with Matthew Schaefer, there’s no need to imagine what the future looks like — it’s right there, gliding through the neutral zone, head up, stick steady, playing the game like it belongs to him.

Because Schaefer isn’t just another hopeful story, he’s already delivered something more valuable than potential. He’s given us moments. The kind you remember on the drive home. The kind that makes you nudge the person next to you and say, “Did you see that?” The type of plays that you know from the moment they happen, you’ll be watching again and again for years to come.

On Saturday night, in just his second NHL game, the 18-year-old defenseman looked capable of giving us a lot more than just glimpses of the future. He kept taking the ice and kept staying out there, playing 26:04 TOI, the most by far, of any defenseman on the team. He had eight shots on goal, something that only Ryan Pulock has done amongst current Isles’ defensemen.
