Good Morning, Islanders Country.
If you stayed up late to watch the Isles lose 4-3 in OT last night, you may have still hit the pillow disappointed but not angry. In a role reversal, it was the Islanders who rallied back from a multi-goal third-period deficit and tied the game with the goalie pulled to tie the game late in the third. With 2:41 remaining, Jean-Gabriel Pageau fed Anders Lee in the slot, and the captain buried his second of the game to tie the game 3-3, something the Isles have been on the other side of too often.
In overtime, the Edmonton stars showcased their skill and took over. After a puck possession barrage, Connor McDavid fed Leon Draisaitl 1:52 into OT for the game. McDavid, the game’s best player, started the game five points shy of 1,000 and ended it at 999. It was a game where the Isles gave up more, both in shots and quality chances, than they have recently, needing Ilya Sorokin to be on the top of his game to stay in the game and steal a point.
The game ended with Edmonton holding a 42-22 shot advantage and if those numbers wasn’t staffering enough, their high-danger shot advantage at 5-on-5 was 15-2. “There are nights you're going home and you're pissed off,” head coach Patrick Roy said. “There are nights you’re going home and you say, ‘okay we stole the point.’ And tonight that was the case.”
