Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Shame on Juan Soto for knocking the Isles off the Newsday back page!
Saturday morning, I posted on our social media account that there have been many times in the last few years when I’ve looked ahead at the schedule and thought, “If they lose the next two games …” and somehow, they always find a way to do better than expected. This weekend was another one of those times.
Following their worst game of the season, the Islanders did what their play said we should least expect, but their track record told us otherwise. This is who they are; this is what they do. They linger, stick around, stay afloat, weather the storm, and pull you back in when you think you’re ready to be out.
The story leading into the weekend, and even on Sunday after their 4-3 win over Carolina, was special teams. MSG Networks flashed this graphic during the broadcast, showing that the Islanders were currently dead last on both the power play and penalty kill. No NHL team has held those positions simultaneously since the 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings, who had a 12-38-4 record then.
The stat isn’t shocking; it’s just shocking bad and leaves you simultaneously frustrated and marginally hopeful because, somehow, the Islanders find themselves in the mix for a playoff spot despite historically bad special teams and injuries to some of their premier players.
