Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Greatness recognizes greatness. It always has.
After tonight, we’ll wonder and hopefully find out what Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid really thinks about Matthew Schaefer.McDavid knows the look of greatness because he’s been wearing it since he was Schaefer’s age. He can tell the difference between hype and substance, between a teenager holding his own and one who actually belongs.
“First off, just a great kid,” McDavid said Wednesday. “He’s got a great personality and brings a lot of energy. As a player, obviously, seems like he’s off to a great start, which is great to see. You see the highlights …Obviously paying attention to how he’s doing, and it seems like he’s doing real well.”
Simple words, but in hockey’s unspoken hierarchy, that’s as high as praise gets. You’re not going to hear veterans hand major compliments to rookies, and McDavid, the best player in the world, doesn’t hand out gold stars to everyone who shares the ice with him. He’s seen hundreds of defensemen try to stop him, shadow him, study him. Schaefer gets the privilege to do so tonight.
