Hockey Night in NY

Good Morning, Islanders Country.

He chirped Henrik Lundqvist on national television. He told a hilarious story about Matt Martin giving him grief for hugging instead of fighting in a scrum. He talked about charter flights, sushi spreads, and Uncrustables — and then, without missing a beat, reflected on his late mother during Hockey Fights Cancer week. That’s the off-ice magic of Matthew Schaefer — he can make you laugh, nod, and feel something real, all in the span of a few sentences.

The 18-year-old rookie defenseman already has it, whatever it is.

One night, he’s skating through the neutral zone like the game was built for him; the next, he’s sitting under studio lights with the NHL on TNT crew, needling legends like Lundqvist with the confidence of someone twice his age. “First off, it’s pretty tough getting a Ranger asking me the first question,” he grinned. “I’d rather the Long Island native ask me first, but I’ll let this one slide.”

That mix of swagger and sincerity makes him special. Schaefer has the poise of a star and the heart of a kid who still can’t believe how fast it’s all happening. “Every time you play at home, it’s probably our best games for sure when the fans are behind us,” he said. “I didn’t know much about Long Island before getting drafted here, and I love it.”

That’s why Matthew Schaefer feels destined for something bigger than just a Calder Trophy campaign. He’s the kind of player you build a team around. And, maybe more importantly, the kind of person you build a fanbase — and a community — around, too.
