Good Morning, Islanders Country.
Trying to keep your spot as a fourth-line winger in your sixth season is neither expected nor desired for former first-round picks, but that is the reality and challenge for Oliver Wahlstrom during the 2024-25 season.
Lou Lamoriello didn’t believe Pierre Engvall was a bottom-six player but felt strong enough about Wahlstrom’s ability that the 24-year-old, who seemed destined for a change of scenery this year, made the team and Engvall is in Bridgeport wearing a Fisherman sweater.
Through three games, he has no points and three shots on net. It’s too early to say whether this is working, will work, or can work. However, we do know that the Isles’ brass, as his teammates, still believe in what he can be.
“What he brings is a little bit different than Mac and I,” linemate Casey Cizikas said. “He’s an elite player. He’s got the shot, and he’s got the work ethic. As these games have come along, you can see his confidence growing each game.
We agree that he has the shot, Casey, but there’s been nothing to indicate that Wahlstrom is an elite player. Fans have sarcastically said that about Josh Bailey for years, but he was a 40-50 point scorer and even an NHL All-Star for one year. Wahlstrom’s best season finished with 24 points in 73 games.
